Moisturize! Since peels can temporarily compromise your skin’s protective barrier, it’s important to reinforce that barrier with a medium-to-thick moisturizer used morning and evening. You may also apply a petrolatum based barrier such as Aquaphor to help protect your skin.
Peeling may be made more visible by wearing makeup such as foundation. Moisturized skin may look better than a made up face.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After your treatment, you may experience redness followed by scaling that lasts between 3-7 days.
You may not experience visible peeling. This is not abnormal, especially for mild peels such as lactic acid peels.
Wear SPF 30 or higher daily and reapply every 2 hours when exposed to sun. If possible, wear protective clothing and hats when in the sun.
DO NOT PICK. If you are experiencing flaking, you do not want to pick or over-exfoliate.
This may lead to scarring or hyperpigmentation. Instead, moisturize & protect your skin. Just like a scab, when it is ready, it will come off on it's own.
Don’t over-exfoliate. Stop using glycolic (and other acids), scrub, brushes and wash cloths.. If your skin is not showing irritation or redness, you may begin acids after 10 days and retinols after 14 days.
Manual exfoliation, including facials, are recommended after 7 days
An exfoliating treatment such as a facial, microdermabrasion or the Signature Facial are recommended 7-14 days after your peel. This should not be scheduled while you are experiencing active irritation & redness.
No facial waxing for 7 days.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Until you are finished peeling, avoid: chlorine, waxing, sun exposure, etc.
Peels may be repeated every 2-5 weeks until you achieve your desired results. Typically 3-5 peels are needed to achieve your goal.
How to Treat Ingrown Hairs
With proper aftercare, you should be able to avoid ingrown hairs, but if you have curly hair, they may still occur. If this happens, I advise the following:
Gently exfoliate the area
Use moist heat to soften the skin followed
Manually exfoliate the area with a soft washcloth
Use an appropriate exfoliating cleanser such as a BHA cleanser. You may use a BHA and/or AHA cleanser, but be aware that glycolic will thin the skin.
After a few days of this treatment, you should be able to see part of the hair at the skin’s surface.
When this occurs, you may use CLEAN tweezers to extract the hair
DO NOT PICK. If the hair is not easily accessible, continue exfoliating
Keep the area clean to avoid infection
Apply a protective barrier using a petrolatum based product such as Polysporin or Aquaphor
Alternately, you may come in for a professional exfoliating treatment where I can try to extract the hair.
