Most people understand that cleansing your skin helps keep your skin healthy by keeping pores clear, removing impurities and toxins and creating a prepared surface for products you want to apply to your skin, but clients have regularly asked me what the purpose of a double cleanse is.
1st cleanse
Removes oils, products and debris from the surface of the skin which allows the special ingredients of the second cleanser to access the actual skin and do their job.
Creamy cleansers and oil based cleansers are fantastic for a first cleanse. If you like using micellar cleansers, this is the correct step to use them in.
2nd cleanse
Allows ingredients to actually access the skin.
This is the step that you will use cleansers with active ingredients that target conditions such as clearing pores, stimulating cellular turnover, and nourishing with probiotics or antioxidants.
When should I double cleanse?
Double cleanse if:
You have oily skin
You have used products that repel water (sunscreen, makeup) since your last cleanse.
Single cleanse if:
You do have not put anything on your face since the last time you washed, you don't feel oiliness or griminess and you are about to apply skincare products or makeup.
Things to consider:
Listen to your skin. If you have dry skin and it becomes more dry if you wash morning and night, you can choose to use a damp washcloth in the morning to prepare a fresh canvas to apply products and/or makeup.
Always wash your face at the end of day, but it doesn't need to be right before bed. I try to cleanse my skin when I'm done with my day so my pores stay clear and because I like to take time to let serums soak in...basically so I can add more serums!
Yes, cleanse your face in the morning. Your skin will have products from the night before and a full night of sweat and oil to remove.
If you aren't sure if you should double cleanse before applying skincare products, remember that your cleanser is probably the least expensive product on your shelf. You don't want to waste expensive products and serums because they cannot reach their target destination.
